Everyone is Eligible to Wake Up!

For over thirty five years I operated as a traditional psychologist, defending our preferred rendition of reality, the one we work as a team to keep in place as “the truth,” and then one day a friend introduced me to the writings of Wei Wu Wei, who deconstructed Buddhism to locate the core message, a message that is 180 degrees out of phase with what we insist reality is.

This core message states that what we refer to a “reality’ is a dream in progress, featuring all the ways the dreamers in this dream dismiss truth as false in order to defend the lie they are ‘real people’ in this dream. In this light, there is no one to know who is dreaming this dream, and the dreamers in this dream have assigned many names to the dreamer of this dream, settling, perhaps, on the concept of mind, a vast intelligence that is the dreamer of this dream, such that nothing exits outside of this dream. The dream is what right now is, and it displays where all the dreamers in this dream are with that fact, somewhere between awake, and one with the truth, to deep in a trance, filling time dismissing truth in order to defend the fiction right now is real and not a

dream, and that all the dreamers in this dream are the people they insist they are.

The Shift

If you read Wei Wu Wei's books, sooner or later you ask the question, which is stranger, his synthesis of the Buddhist view of reality, or how we fill reality defending the lie truth

is false? It is no accident that we are firmly entrenched in our defense of what we insist reality is. Amnesia successfully shields us from the possibility that what we defend as “the truth” is false, and that what amnesia keeps out of mind, successfully, is the truth. What comes into focus is the growing awareness that the defense of what we refer to “the truth” is “The Main Event.” As long as your own amnesia works to obscure what the truth might be, you can't see that you are part of a vast team devoted to proving truth is false, or doesn't exist. This is what we do. Time is the venue for TAG, or “The Anti-truth Game.” As truth comes into focus, you identify that TAG is an index of the degree to which someone defends the lie truth is false, from some of the time, to all of the tim

e. The more this becomes transparent, the faster you identify the connection between our 'mental health' and where we are with the truth.

If time is the venue for the game of TAG, or the sum and intensity of what we do to pretend we can prove truth is false, then it should follow that those whose presentation indicates they are in sync with truth should display what we refer to as “good mental health.” In fact, low TAG individuals, who don't fill time 'at war with truth,' come across as objective (awake), rational, non delusional and appropriate. Conversely, the high TAG individuals display increasing 'mental instability,' the more they fill time defending the fiction it's possible to prove truth is false.

Truth is What 'AMAZING' is All About

In retrospect, I now know what it was about reading “Open Secret” that stunned me into total bewilderment. My sensations told me that his words had given me a glimpse into the heart of “The Big Picture,” and that this glimpse cast serious doubts about the nature of reality. If consciousness is the context for truth, then amnesia obscures 90 percent of what truth is all about. We occupy a small slice of what the truth might be, using amnesia to send the rest of the story to the back of the mind where we can dismiss it because it raises serious questions about the view we defend as “the truth.” If you look at consciousness as the whole story, we occupy the end product of consciousness, the part that features the sum of what we do to dismiss truth as false. TAG, or “The Anti-Truth Game” describes how we fill time 'at war with the truth' about truth, in order to maintain our preferred rendition of what we want truth to be.

If you can consider that truth is unitary, then truth is consciousness, featuring us playing TAG with it. This puts truth in the driver's seat. If it is what consciousness is, then it is the author of TAG, and amnesia, and how we fill time pretending we can prove truth is false. Truth,

in other words, authors us engaged in its rebuttal. Consciousness is truth featuring us playing TAG with it. Amnesia shields us from the architecture of the game. TAG requires amnesia to keep us in the dark so we can fill time pretending we can prove truth is false. If truth exists as a constant, then the option to prove it is false is zero. This means truth authors us engaged in a no win parody. Time features us stuck in the fiction we can prove truth is false, which is patently absurd if truth provides the context for its own rebuttal.

Wei Wu Wei's Message

A close friend, who enjoyed a work shop I gave, asked me one afternoon if I had ever heard of Wei Wu Wei, aka Terence Gray? He handed me the book, Open Secret,” and I asked him, “what’s it all about.” He replied, “I have no idea. Read it and let me know what you think it’s all about.” I took it home, opened it after dinner, and the next thing I knew it was dawn. I sat there stunned, with some vague awareness that his message not only resonated at some deep unconscious level, but this book was ‘the game changer’ in my life.’ In one full swoop, he made it clear why nothing is what we insist it is. There is reality, and then then there is our rendition of reality which is unreal and defended as real. In a cold sweat, I saw what worked and didn’t work about psychotherapy. I was too stunned to experience the humor inherent in reality, as he defined it. Years passed before I realized that the disparity of his view of reality, and the version of reality we argue for, is what humor is.

Wei Wu Wei devoted the later part of his life to the deconstruction of Buddhist philosophy. He made what appeared to be a very abstract topic relatively simple. His synthesis of Buddhist ideas illuminated what passes for polarization between West and East. On the surface, they appear to defend the notion of duality, but on closer inspection, what came into focus is that they are two aspects of a single process. East focused more on the origin of reality, while West focuses on defending the assumption that reality is

really real. The input (East) manifests as the output (West), and the two work as

one. East views West with humor, while West views East with periodic alarm.
